Old Handwoven Carpet, Corner Medallion Layout, Wool on Cotton Warp, Mashad, 325 × 500 cm Ref 11600132
This antique handwoven rug from Mashhad, in a medallion-and-corner design with the timeless “Sheikh Safi” layout and produced by the Saber Carpet brand, measures 325 × 500 cm (10'8" × 16'5") with an area of 16.25 m² (174.91 ft²), making it suitable for ceremonial spaces. A soft wool pile in the field and a durable cotton warp, together with a weaving density of approximately 7,300 knots/dm², indicate precise, professional craftsmanship. The medallion-and-corner design is derived from the spiritual architecture of the Sheikh Safi al-Din Ardabili shrine, evoking cosmic order, centrality, and inner balance. The central medallion, like a spiritual dome, rests within a grand madder-red field, while the corner motifs gently embrace the surface. The madder-red ground lends a special warmth to the space, while the deep navy border with floral ornamentation provides a graceful frame.
