Old Handwoven Carpet, Square/Block Layout, Wool and Silk on Cotton Warp, Qom, 317 × 395 cm Ref 11200134
This antique handwoven rug from Qom, featuring a Kheshti (compartment) design with subterranean motifs, measures 317 × 395 cm (10'5" × 13'0") with an area of 12.53 m² (134.87 ft²). The Kheshti layout is intelligently and symmetrically arranged so that each panel forms an independent world of color, form, and narrative. This grid-like structure has its roots in Iranian architecture and traditional tilework. The weaving density is approximately 3,300 knots/dm², indicating precise and skilled craftsmanship. A warm, harmonious palette of varied colors across the field and borders creates a lively, eye-catching diversity. The use of silk highlights in the weave imparts a gentle, silken sheen, and together with the strong cotton warp, brings both softness and durability.
