Hand-Knotted Wool Carpets
Wool is what most Persian carpets have always been made from, and for good reason. It is resilient — the fibres spring back rather than crushing flat. It is naturally stain-resistant because of the lanolin still present in good wool. And it takes natural dye beautifully, ageing into softer, richer tones rather than simply fading.
Why wool suits family homes
If a carpet is going into a living room, a majlis that sees real use, or anywhere with children or pets, wool is the sensible choice. A well-made wool carpet will outlast several sofas. Many of the antique pieces we sell are a hundred years old and still in daily use.
Not all wool is equal. Highland sheep from cold regions produce longer, stronger fibres with more lanolin. Wool taken from a live sheep by shearing is far superior to wool removed chemically after slaughter — the latter is weaker and dulls quickly. We buy only hand-spun shorn wool, which is also why our pieces show the slight irregularity in the pile that machine-spun yarn never has.
