Square Handmade Rugs
Square Hand-Knotted Rugs
Square carpets suit a specific kind of room, and when the room is right nothing else works as well. Majlis seating arranged around four sides. A square reception space. A conversation group of four chairs. In each case a rectangular rug fights the symmetry of the layout, while a square reinforces it.
The Persian tradition
Square formats appear throughout Persian weaving, particularly in tribal work where the loom width dictated the proportions, and in the small square pieces woven as seating mats — the poshti tradition. Many square rugs are built around a single central medallion with the field radiating outward, a composition that only really resolves when the format is symmetrical.
Choosing a size
For a majlis, measure the seating footprint and allow the rug to extend at least 30 cm beyond the front edge of the cushions on all four sides. For a seating group, the front legs of every chair should sit on the rug. In a square room, leave an even margin of floor on all sides — around 40 to 60 cm — rather than filling the space.
Squares are less common than rectangles in every weaving region, so the selection is naturally limited. If you need a specific size we can usually source it within three months.
