This fine handwoven Tabriz rug, in a medallion-and-corner design, is a brilliant union of pictorial art, mysticism, and literary narrative—woven in the city of Tabriz. It offers not only visual beauty but also a reflection of the spirit of poetry and the enigmatic tales of Sufi tradition. Measuring 137 × 195 cm (4'6" × 6'5") with an area of 2.68 m² (28.85 ft²) and an approximate weaving density of 4,100 knots/dm², the piece belongs to the class of delicate, masterfully executed rugs. Its principal theme is drawn from the affecting love story of "Sheikh San‘an" and the Christian maiden—one of the most renowned episodes in Attar Nishapuri’s “The Conference of the Birds.” Here, the Sheikh’s spiritual transformation from earthly love to the realm of the divine is rendered with imaginative, artistic grace. Within the medallion-and-corner framework and a deep madder-red field framed by a dark navy border, the composition attains a dramatic, majestic presence. It is a rug that pleases the eye and invites the soul to contemplation—an artwork where image and narrative are so closely interwoven that each glance becomes a fresh reading of love, sacrifice, and the human journey, all under the pure artistry of Tabriz. At the center appears one of the most beautiful couplets from the ghazals of "Hafez": Though I am old, draw me tight into your arms for a night, so that at dawn I may rise youthful from your side.
