Caring for your machine-made rug
How you look after a machine-made rug depends on its fibres. Check the label on the back before you clean anything. Not sure what it says? Send us a photo of the label on WhatsApp.
Which fibre is your rug?
Viscose, modal and bamboo silk, and any blend that includes them
What to know: Fibres made from plant cellulose. They shine like silk but aren't silk. They are the most sensitive to water: colours can run and the pile can change.
At home: Vacuum gently. Blot spills with a dry white cloth.
Never: Never wash at home, not even a small area. No water and no cleaning products.
Acrylic and polyester-linen
What to know: Synthetic fibres; polyester-linen is polyester blended with linen. They handle water better, but not heat.
At home: Vacuum with a soft brush attachment. For a small mark, use a soft brush and a little cool or lukewarm water.
Never: No hot water and no heat.
Blends: if the label lists viscose, modal or bamboo silk at all, care for the whole rug as the sensitive group.
Handmade carpet? Its care is different. See our Rug Care page.
Everyday care
- Vacuum once a week with gentle suction. Never use a rotating or beater brush. On acrylic and polyester-linen, a soft brush attachment works well.
- Never vacuum a wet or damp rug.
- Turn the rug 180° every 6 months, so wear and light spread evenly.
- Keep it out of long, direct sunlight. Colours can fade, and turning the rug later won't bring them back.
- Keep it dry. Wet floors, plant pots and AC leaks can keep the rug damp underneath.
- Lift furniture instead of dragging it, and don't pull loose threads or fringes.
When something spills
- Blot straight away with a clean, white, absorbent cloth: press and lift. Don't rub or scrub.
- Lift anything thick gently with a spoon.
- Add no shampoo, soap or stain remover.
- Viscose, modal or bamboo silk: stop here and don't add water. If a mark remains, send us a photo.
- Acrylic or polyester-linen: if a mark remains, dab it with a little cool or lukewarm water (no warmer than 30–35°C), working gently with a soft brush in the direction of the pile. Then blot it dry.
- Dry the rug flat, in the shade, with air around it; a fan helps. Never hang it or use heat.
Contact us straight away if a large area gets wet, colours start to run or a mark stays.
Never use
- Bleach
- Alkaline products: laundry powder, ordinary soap, baking soda
- Strong acids
- Hot water
- Hair dryers, heaters or direct sun to dry the rug
- Solvents: petrol, thinner, alcohol
- Carpet shampoo or stain removers
- A rotating or beater brush
