The Ardabil design, woven in Tabriz. This carpet is one of a pair commissioned by Azimzadeh as a contemporary recreation of the Ardabil design, the famous Safavid carpet of 1539–40 whose two surviving originals are held by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
The hallmarks of the design are all here: the central medallion with its surrounding ovals, the two hanging lamps, and the inscription cartouche carrying the name of Maqsud Kashani and the date 946. Each carpet of the pair measures 6 × 12 m.
This is a new work woven from the historical design, not a museum original. Read the story of the Ardabil Carpet and our Tabriz pair.
