Ordering a Custom-Made Persian Carpet: How the Process Works

Sometimes the right carpet does not exist yet. The room is an unusual shape, the colours have to match a specific interior, or the size is beyond anything in stock. That is when a custom-made carpet makes sense.

Commissioning a carpet is a very different experience from buying one off the floor. This guide explains each step, so you know what to expect and what you will be asked to approve.

First, check what already exists

We always start with carpets in stock. Our collection has unusual depth in large and non-standard sizes, and if nothing in Dubai suits you, we can check the stock of our Tehran branch. A carpet that already exists can be seen, touched and placed in your room before you commit, and there is no production wait.

It is worth looking through our carpets larger than 24 m² and our guide to rug sizes before deciding to commission. If nothing fits, a custom order is the next step.

How a custom carpet is ordered

  1. Brief. We discuss the room, the dimensions, the design direction, the colours and the budget. Measurements, floor plans and photographs of the space all help.
  2. Artwork. You receive the final artwork showing the design and the exact dimensions. This is the drawing the carpet will be woven from.
  3. Your approval in writing. You approve that exact version of the artwork in writing. If anything changes, a new version is approved.
  4. Materials. The materials are finalised, for example a silk warp with a kork wool pile and silk highlights, or full silk.
  5. Timing and terms. We tell you the approximate production and delivery time, and the price, deposit and balance are recorded in the order.
  6. Production. Weaving begins after the specification is approved and the deposit is received.

Dimensions are exact

The finished carpet is made to match the dimensions on the approved order. That is one of the main reasons to commission rather than compromise on a stock size, so measure carefully and confirm whether the dimensions you give us are for the woven carpet with or without the fringe.

Colour: what to expect

Colours on a screen or a printed artwork never look exactly like dyed wool and silk. A slight difference between the artwork and the woven carpet is normal, and we explain this and ask you to accept it before production begins. If you need to judge the colours closely, a woven sample is the best way.

Woven samples

For customers who need to check colour or result closely, we can weave a 60 × 60 cm sample from the same order. The sample has its own separate fee, which we explain before it is made, and you approve the sample before main production begins.

How long it takes

Weaving time depends on the design, the knot density, the size and the number of weavers. A complex design can take far longer than its size suggests. Our article on what determines carpet price gives real examples, from about six months for a 6 m² Tabriz to about six years for a 12 m² carpet of 120 raj.

During production, we keep you informed. If we foresee a delay, we tell you before the due date rather than waiting for you to ask.

Changes after the order is placed

If you want to change the design, size or material once the order is placed, we check with the workshop whether the change is feasible, what it would cost and how it would affect the timing. The change is made only after you approve it in writing and the additional amount is agreed.

Because a custom carpet is made specifically for you, cancellation terms are different from a stock purchase once production has started. Please read our return and refund policy before ordering.

The final check

Before the carpet is dispatched, it is checked against the approved artwork and, where one was made, the approved sample: design, dimensions, colour, material, quality and condition. Every handmade carpet we sell also comes with a certificate of authenticity.

Frequently asked questions

Can I order a Persian carpet in a custom size?

Yes. A custom carpet is woven to the exact dimensions on the approved order. We usually check stock first, including very large and unusual sizes, before recommending a commission.

Will the colours match the design on screen exactly?

Not exactly. A slight difference between a screen or printed artwork and the woven carpet is normal. If colour is critical, a 60 × 60 cm woven sample can be made first.

Can I see a sample before the full carpet is woven?

Yes. We can weave a 60 × 60 cm sample from the same order for a separate fee, and you approve it before main production begins.

How long does a custom-made carpet take?

It depends on the design, density, size and number of weavers. We give you an approximate production and delivery time when the order is confirmed.

Can I change the design after ordering?

We check with the workshop whether the change is feasible and what it would cost and take. It is made only after your written approval and agreement on any additional amount.

Start a custom order

Send us your room dimensions and a few images of the look you want, and we will come back with options, starting with what is already in stock.
